Windcave National
Park South Dakota |
Becoming the seventh national
park in 1903, the primary goal was to protect a cave. When the park was first
established, little wildlife lived there but as the years have passed and the
boundaries of the park grew, elk, bison, and pronghorn made this region home.
Although this national park is smaller than other national parks,
coming in at 28,295 acres, it still has thousands of visitors that come here
each year.
The landscape here has been formed by rocks, featuring some
of the oldest in the northwestern area of the park.
These rocks called
schists are actually metamorphic rocks that were at one time formed from
intense pressure and heat. Scientists estimate this occurrence was some two
billion years ago.
Today, you can still enjoy the magnificent structures
as they stand tall and proud. To make the rocks even more beautiful, mica
crystals grow that have a pink, gray, silver, and black color. The exploration
here is absolutely, gorgeous and quite impressive.
